Alex Murdaugh's legal team lead by seasoned attorney Richard "Dick" Harpootlian gave a press conference explaining the events that have unfolded which will lead to a possible retrial. They have filed paper work with the court alleging jury tampering by the Clerk of the Court.
The Alex Murdaugh legal team has filed documents with the South Carolina court insinuating, Clerk of Court Rebecca Hill, violated her oath of office by coaching the Jury toward a guilty verdict and influencing the removal of another juror. Serious accusations to say the least. The Alex Murdaugh defense team is alleging, by the testimony of several jurors, that Rebecca Hill told the jury, to not be fooled by the defense
, and just before Mr. Murduagh was going to testify she told the jury to watch Mr. Murdaugh closely
. These out-of-bounds comments will be the cornerstone of a evidentiary hearing if granted.
The clerk of the court is a elected position. Thus, Rebecca Hill was an elected officer of the court not appointed. The function of the Clerk of the Court is to be a concierge to the jury. For example, the clerk will arrange meals for the jury, set up lodging if needed, take care of medical needs for those requiring special handling, ect. The clerk is not to make statements regarding the case at hand.
Additional allegations were made by Mr. Harpootlian and company in their filings with the court. They claim Mrs. Hill fabricated a story about a Facebook post in order to have a juror removed from the jury. The juror was juror 785, aka the egg juror. Juror 785 was replaced with juror 254 just before the jury deliberated. Evidently, Juror 785 was having one to many adult beverages with her ex-husband and voiced her opinion to the ex-husband. Then, it was told to the judge by Rebecca Hill that he, the ex-husband, made a Facebook post on a gossip page about the encounter. However, according to the Harpootlian team this post cannot be found on the ex-husbands Facebook account. Thus, Dick Harpootlian is claiming she made up the post in order to have a juror, she thought was going to vote not guilty, removed from the jury. It has stated she was questioned by the Clerk of the Court several times during the trial about how she was going to vote by the clerk. To add more content, during the trial the South Carolina Law Enforcemnt (SLED) lead the investigation into the allegation by the court, and one of the investigating officers was a witness
in the trial.
The jury deliberated on March 2, 2023 and returned a verdict in a few short hours. An additional question now brought up by the defense team in the request for an evidentiary hearing concerns a comment made by the Clerk of the Court Rebecca Hill. She made a comment just before the jury began to deliberate that this wasn't going to take long. Furthermore she is alleged to have put pressure on the jury to hurry up, by threatening them with a requirement to stay over night, when none of them had a change of clothes.
The Clerk of the Court, Ms. Rebecca Hill, has also written a book about the trial, which is titled Behind the Doors of Justice: The Murdaugh Murders . The book is currently an amazon best seller, in the financial thrillers category.
As Alex Murdaugh rises from the dead, prison that is, his son Buster Murdaugh proclaims his father innocence.
